Giving Up on Carbon Emissions Reduction, is Geo-Engineering the Way to Go?

So, you’ve changed your light bulbs, you wear a sweater in your house because you turned your thermostat down, you unplugged all your electronics that aren’t being used and you are now enjoying “5 minute showers.” The world seems safer already! Or is it? As you look down the street at your neighbor’s house, you watch in “climate change horror” as they “warm up their Hummer” before driving the 2 blocks to take their 16 year old son to school (and that’s because his “monster truck” has a flat!) The neighbor other has left all the lights on in his new 10,000 square ft McMansion while away for the weekend, and you have heard rumors about plasma TV’s in all 8 bedrooms! So, are all your sacrifices worth it, or should we just turn to geo-engineering? Read the rest of this entry »

Home Decor and the Environment

We all know that, as consumers, our money is our vote. When we choose products that are not Eco friendly, we elect to destroy our life support system. We elect to poison our water and soil, and to make our atmosphere into Swiss cheese that we cannot breathe, and that will not protect us from carcinogenic cosmic rays.

When we choose products that are produced without toxins, or are made from materials that are sustainably harvested, we elect to give our children a planet they can survive on.

This then is our challenge, in a consumer driven market, we must change the way we shop in order to change the way factories produce their products. Ultimately, we are responsible decision makers every time we pull out our wallets. We can change the way we consume Earth’s resources. Read the rest of this entry »

Effects of Burning Firewood on the Environment

There aren’t many things more comforting than the feeling of warmth that comes from a wood fire. But in order to experience that warmth someone had to cut up a tree to make the firewood. Is burning wood damaging to the environment or could it actually be good for the environment?

It all depends on whether or not the trees are responsibly harvested. If forests are being cleared to produce firewood and not being properly reforested then burning firewood can be damaging to the environment.

In most cases forests are not being destroyed to make firewood. A lot of the time when trees are cut into firewood they are replaced by new trees or existing trees that were once too crowded. When responsibly harvested firewood can be a renewable source of energy. With modern forestry practices firewood often comes from poorly formed, dead or unhealthy trees that are removed to allow the remaining trees to grow better. Read the rest of this entry »
